  13.    On June 21, NPR's "Science Friday" showcased a panel of skeptics from the 
  14. current conference.  Most, if not all, of the speakers I heard were CSICOP 
  15. associates.  Nothing new or unexpected was said by anyone; the purpose 
  16. (esoteric) seemed to have been to drum up business for The Skeptical 
  17. Inquirer, and to promote critical thinking among the masses (exoteric).

  19.    Repeatedly, the panelists perpetuated typical nebulous skeptical 
  20. "thinking" by lumping every "pseudoscientific" item together, without 
  21. regard for the need for obvious distinctions.  Ufo's were mixed in with 
  22. spontaneous human combustion, astrology, ESP, and other 
  23. rationalist-unfriendly categories.

  25.    What none of these CSICOP-associated skeptics seemed to understand is 
  26. that ufo's have nothing to do with belief, delusional or otherwise.  The 
  27. "core phenomenon" of ufology are reports, observations, and measurements 
  28. of seemingly anomalous aerial objects.  Nothing more, nothing less.  The 
  29. reports, observations, and measurements are susceptible to empirical 
  30. investigation and evaluation, when taken together as the "core 
  31. phenomenons'" data.  They are not wish fulfillment, hallucination, 
  32. optical illusion or "New Age superstition".  
  33.  
  34.    In and of themselves, they have nothing whatsoever to do with ghosts, 
  35. auras, mind reading, telekinesis, or the ascension into glory of Mr 
  36. Presley.  To dismiss, as the NPR panelists did, an entire phenomenon 
  37. because of its attendant sensationalistic social effects, is arbitary and 
  38. illogical.  Many scientific and technological entities were met with 
  39. exactly the same type of hysteria and superstition that the "ufo core 
  40. phenomenon" has been and continues to be met with.  Apparently, CSICOP 
  41. skeptics buy into and promote the fallacy of "guilt by association", a 
  42. tactic practiced by such defenders of conventional thinking as Donald 
  43. Menzel and Carl Sagan.  As long as skeptics allow this lazy-minded type 
  44. of enculturation ("ufo's, astrology and all that stuff believed in by 
  45. kooks and crackpots - count met out!") to stand as a cognitive criterion, 
  46. they perform a disservice to science, to the public - and to skepticism 
  47. itself.

  49.    The panelists voiced the tired old skeptical cliche, "Extraordinary 
  50. claims demand extraordinary evidence."  None of them seems to be aware of 
  51. this statement's missing middle term:  "Extraordinary evidence demands an 
  52. extraordinary investigation."  To date, this investigation has not yet 
  53. occurred, in no small part due to the "bullshit quotient" surrounding 
  54. ufo's which the skeptics themselves perpetuate with their "guilt by 
  55. association" fallacy.  Not only are ufo's guilty by association with 
  56. crackpots, but implicitly, so too is anyone who attempts to perform "the 
  57. extraordinary investigation" guilty by association with a field judged a 
  58. priori to be "goofball".

  60.    Perhaps the "real truth" about ufo's will emerge from the courageous 
  61. efforts of "real skeptics" who put aside the guilt-by-association social 
  62. stigma and contribute to the as-yet unperformed extraordinary investigation.
